Okay, just a few notes on what to look out for when approaching a website host. Firstly, I should point out that the package you finally settle with depends largely on what you want to do.
A host offer to you an entire, dedicated server. This has the advantage of being faster, more flexible and generally more reliable. Such a contract may cost hundreds of pounds per month.
If you intend to offer or ‘stream’ 1000’s of videos or music files, then you will have to raid your bank account and be prepared to pay hundreds of pounds per. You may need to look in to dedicated servers.
Business account or reseller accounts
If you want to have multiple domains and websites all on the same account (I personally like use this approach), then expect to pay between £100 and £150 per year for a decent account.
If you only want to operate a single website, then choose this option. For about £20 per year, you should get plenty of space (500mb to 2 gig) and all of the trimmings – php, MySQL, etc.
What features should I look out for?
If you want your site to be dynamic – utilise PHP and MySQL databases, then you will need to choose a Linux based server that has PHP and MySQL installed on it. My advice would be to shop around and choose an established name in the game.
